Statue of Unity
India’s on a mission to build the world’s tallest statue in Gujarat– and it will be a tribute to Indian freedom fighter, Sardar Patel.
This Sardar Patel statue that boasts to be twice the size of New York’s Statue of Liberty and taller than China’s Spring Temple Buddha, which at 128m rules as the tallest statue in the world, will be located in the Indian state of Gujarat.
With a vision to be at a height of 182m to forever capture the spirit of India’s ‘Iron Man’, bidders are already being invited from across the world to undertake this project; the latest issue of the Economist has a full-page advert inviting tenders.
Gujarat chief minister, Narendra Modi, wrote about the project in his official blog in October last year, stating that the memorial will serve as a “source of inspiration”.
Mr Modi wrote that the Sardar Patel statue would act as a “high-tech museum, chronicling 90 years’ history of India’s freedom fighters” and will also be developed as a research centre for “preserving the unity and integrity of India”.
“Thus, it would be standing high not just in meters and feet but much more in terms of academic, historical, national and spiritual values,” he added.
Mr Modi has said that he expects the project to be complete in three years and that it would be called the “Statue of Unity”. The project is expected to cost £162 million and proposals are to be handed in by July 11.
Sardar Patel was a close friend of Mahatma Gandhi, father of the Indian nation. Mr Patel was also the first home minister of independent India. source: asian correspondent
